Little Forests Kingston

Come help plant Little Forests this week!

Our first three Little Forests are celebrating their first birthday and, after a year of preparation, we’re ready to plant our next three! We hope you can join us this week, bringing your energy, love and hope to help plant 1290 seedlings in their new homes!

Unloading, sorting, labelling help

Seedlings are arriving at AMHS on Thursday and we need people to help us unload, label, and sort for transport to the different sites.

Planting coach tree planting training

Last year planting coaches helped volunteers learn how to plant the seedlings using the Miyawaki method. If you’d like training, join us 5:00 pm Thursday for about an hour. If you can’t make the training, watch the planting coach training video from last year.

Planting Big Sandy Bay Little Forest on Wolfe Island

Astrid says that “thanks to generous offers of help yesterday on Wolfe Island - like soil prep from Pat Casey. Clint Broeders brought some great 'shit' (composted organic dairy manure). Pat also put the aged wood chip mulch in place. If anyone can help with sorting at 8am on Thurs. Oct. 13 at AMHS, 35 Lyons St. Kingston, please let me know. There is a full rain barrel there for watering. We may need to plant on Sunday too but will send an update on Sat. afternoon. Just bring your positive energy and shovels please.....300 trees are our goal.”

  • Saturday Oct 15 starting at 9:30 am at Big Sandy Bay Parking area

  • Questions? Able to help sort & transport to Wolfe Island? Email Astrid at [email protected]

Pocket Little Forests at the Princess Street Promenade

Thanks to everyone who helped make our booth at the Princess Street Promenade on September 17 a huge success! The kids loved learning about different tree nuts thanks to John, a member of the Ontario Nut Grower’s Association. We had some great conversations with people from Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, all keen to bring the idea to their cities.

Don’t you love some of the answers to the question Joanne asked “When you imagine a tree, what do you see? How do you feel?”

57 people entered our draw for a free Pocket Little Forest kit. Prusha (a Queen’s student launching a Little Forests club at Queen’s) drew the lucky winner. Congratulations Vicki!

10 people were keen to rip out a section of their lawn and replace it with a Pocket Little Forest… preordering a kit of 10 trees and shrubs for 2023 planting.

Check out the full picture album.

If you’re interested in a kit, we’ll be posting details on our website in November on the kits and how to order.

Need a few strong folks to help place these magnificent stumps

Sadly, the Emerald Ash Borer, which has wreaked such havoc on our Ash trees, has now killed a truly amazing elder Ash in Reddendale. Eco Tree Care generously donated their workers’ time and a truck to move these stumps to Lakeside. Thanks to Jim Brown for making this happen! These stumps will make a wonderful learning circle (and climbing challenge) for all of the children and young people using Lakeside as an on-the-land learning space

Jim is going to bring a trolley to help us shift these into position, but we need three or four strong folks to help tip & roll. If you’re able to help, email [email protected].
