Help plant 5 little forest beginning this Saturday

Help plant Little Forests

Join us beginning Saturday October 14 to help plant five Little Forests. A tree takes an average of about 15 minutes to plant, including: selecting a tree, digging, gifting the new tree with forest soil, dipping the tree in water inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi, firming down the soil around the roots and checking that the tree is firmly anchored. With about 2400 trees to plant, that means around 600 person hours of volunteering so bring your friends and family and help Kingston grow into a City in a Forest!

Safety procedures

To keep yourself and others safe, please read and follow these safety procedures when on site:

  • Be aware that the ground of the planting sites is uneven. Tools, equipment and belongings may be left on the ground. Take care to avoid trip hazards.

  • You may be strong, but ask for help when lifting heavy items.

  • Take a break and change your position often to avoid muscle strain or injury.

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands, close-toed shoes to protect your feet and rain gear to keep warm and dry.

  • Planning to take a break to eat and drink? That’s a great idea! Stow away your tools wash your hands at the facilities provided, then enjoy your break outside of the planting site.

  • Keep hydrated! Didn’t bring water or a water bottle? Ask us, we’ll have some available.

  • Hot day? Don’t forget sunscreen. Didn’t bring any? Ask us, we’ll share!

  • We’re working in nature and that means insects are as welcome here as you are so take care. We have insect repellent if you need it and wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt help as well. A tick check when you get home is a must-do.

  • Parents and guardians, we’re soooo glad you brought your kids!! Please supervise them while they’re here and help them follow these safety guidelines.

  • This is a no-smoking event, please leave the site if you need to smoke.

  • A first aid kit, naloxone kit and defibrillator are available as is a washroom. Just ask.
