Seedlings are here! Ready to plant?

Little Forests Kingston

The truck with our Little Forest seedlings arrived around 1:00 pm Wednesday (a day late). Thanks to everyone who came out to unload, stage, and transport, it went much faster than we anticipated… all the seedlings were off to their final homes by 5:30!

You can’t tell, but there are probably around 300 seedlings on this pallet. Some are quite tall, others very small.

Next year we’ll make signs for the staging area so we can arrange the seedlings alphabetically to make it much easier to sort into the different forests and load into vehicles to transport to their final homes. We’re also going to colour code by canopy, tree, understory, and shrub to make planting days easier.

Training planting coaches

On Wednesday and Thursday we held sessions to teach people who volunteered to be coaches our planting method. Coaches will be on site for all plantings. If you weren’t able to make the coach training (or want a refresher), watch Adam’s video captured during Astrid’s coaching session.

What to bring

  • Gloves

  • Shovels

  • Small amount of forest soil as a gift to the trees

  • Treats to share

  • Chairs to sit on (especially at HWY 15 as there is limited seating)

  • Sun/rain shelter if you have one

  • Video equipment if you’d like to capture the day

First trees are planted!

River School & KILN were on the land at HWY 15 yesterday. One of the kids said “Best day ever!” Others, after some coaching, sent the coaches away, confident they’d mastered how to plant (they had).

Call to artists

Sandra, Priya, Jill and Clarke have been working on celebrating the planting. Priya says “we’d like to encourage artists to create anything they’d like based on what moves them during planting. If you’d like to participate, bring art supplies depending on your preferred medium (such as paint, canvas, musical instruments, etc.)
